Durgan, welcome to the Leadership Interview

How do you start your day?

I am an early riser. I wake up my boys who usually sleep through their alarm, make my wife a cup of tea and go on a 5km run.

What was your first job and what is the worst job you have ever done?

My first job was working in a shoe shop it was also the worst job I have ever done – smelly feet!

What advice would you give to others about furthering their careers?

Never stop learning and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Take every opportunity you have for training and exploring new and interesting ideas.

Who inspires you and why?

I am inspired by professional business leaders who never sit back on their laurels and let life pass them by. They follow the above advice! I take an interest in military leaders who exercise great discipline and determination.

Do you think a talent to lead is nature or nurture?

Good question! I think a combination of both. Not everyone has the leadership gene but those that do need to have it fostered in them. It is something that needs to be given guidance and nurtured.

How can a leader fail? Do you have a personal example?

It can sometimes be difficult as a leader to see the wood for the trees. There are so many different aspects of running a business that the obvious solution can be overlooked when there is an absence of clarity. It is important to empower those around you so that each and every employee has a sense of ownership for their part of the business. In the early days of running a business, the handing over of control can be very challenging. However, I have now reached the stage in my career where I have a valued and trusted team around me and I am only too happy to let them take some control.

What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?

My greatest strength is the ability to close an opportunity and to embrace change. My greatest weakness is sometimes not trusting my instincts sooner.

What do you find most challenging about being a leader?

Probably the expectation that I will have the immediate solution to any problems and that I am firing on all cylinders 24 hours a day.

What are you most proud of?

My relationship with my wife and three sons despite the hours I work!

What’s your biggest self-indulgence?

A good box set and a takeaway with my wife.
