We are excited to announce the launch of the MSc in Crowded Space Design, Management and Risk Analysis. This MSc from Edinburgh Napier University has been developed in close collaboration with Mind Over Matter (MOM) Consultancy. It is a postgraduate, full time, workshop based course starting in January 2022.
Students can study whilst in employment because it blends online/workplace learning, workplace assessment and some weekend workshops in Edinburgh.
The design and management of crowded spaces, in particular crowd safety and security, has become one of the most important aspects of creating and sustaining events. The MSc programme therefore starts by understanding the crowd and their environment (exploring both the practice and theory of the crowded space) and explores the effective management of the crowd itself.
The course blends the psychosocial elements with the physical to ensure a holistic approach. Examining the ways in which the crowd think can be used to influence the development of sites and the management of the space.
The MSc has an interdisciplinary approach and is specifically work-based. It is taught through the ‘Learning in the Round’ philosophy. This is where facilitators (tutors), experts and participants are interchangeable and therefore provide a foundational platform for the creation of new knowledge, which can be challenged and practiced in the safe environments of the classroom, the workshop and ultimately in the participants own workplace.
The modules of study are:
- The Changing Crowded Space
- Interdisciplinary Approaches to Spatial Problems in Crowded Environments
- Research Methods
- Spatial Planning, Topography, Urban and Non-Urban Design
- Psychosocial Engineering for Crowded Space
- Organisational Culture and the Management of Crowded Space
This is a course for those involved in the management of events, festivals or crowded spaces (such as shopping centres, public spaces and transport hubs).
